Bookmaker William Hill has predicted that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will be the highest grossing movie of 2015, outmuscling the forthcoming instalments of both the Avengers and James Bond franchises.

In its rundown of the biggest films of the year the bookmaker makes the forthcoming Disney film, directed by JJ Abrams, a huge odds-on favourite to be the most successful of the year. The other contenders are Avengers: Age of Ultron which will be the 4/1 outsider ahead of Jurassic World at 8/1 with Spectre, the new 007 film coming in fourth with odds of 9/1.

William Hill spokesman Joe Crilly told Crunchsports.com: “After a slow year for blockbusters in 2014, it looks as though 2015 could be the best ever year for movies.”

Last year, Credit Suisse’s Michael Senn predicted that the film would take $1.2bn at the box office, StarWars7News.com reports. This week, Cowan & Co. projected the exact same figure. But FBR Capital Markets goes further and says the film would likely take in $700m domestically and another $1bn overseas.

Some analysts say that the hotly anticipated film may even outperform those expectations, and could go on to be the highest grossing film of all time. To do so it would have to top James Cameron’s Avatar, which made $2.8bn when it was released in 2009.

“I can’t speak for the cast and crew, I can just speak for myself, but for me I thought, ‘Don’t you want to wait so you can get the real thing?’ And also, the [plot theories] that get that formulated based on these things — they couldn’t be more far off-base.” That’s Oscar Isaac, one of the new cast members in the upcoming Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens and member of the Fun Police there.

While Isaac may be down on fans speculating on the nature of the heavily under-wraps plot for the latest return to a galaxy far, far away – and like, check your script privilege mate, you already know what happens, all the rest of us have are rumours and hearsay – the internet has been a hive of such theories since the existence of a new Star Wars was announced.

Even following that long-awaited first teaser trailer, details are very thin on what The Force Awakens will actually be about, let alone who Isaac – or any of the new cast members – will be playing. And how do all the old guard factor in, too?

Thankfully, geeks are more than willing to fill in any such gaps. Culled from across the web, with speculation on everything from severed hands to marital statuses, here are ten shocking (but believable) theories about Star Wars 7…

10. It Centres On The Yuuzhan Vong Invasion
9. Leia Is A Jedi
8. Han Solo Is The Rebel Leader
7. Mandalorians And The Witches of Dathomir
6. Lupita Nyong’o Is Asajj Ventress
5. Luke Has Joined The Dark Side
4. Darth Vader Will Appear Somehow (As Played By A WWE Star)
3. The Bad Guys Are Jedi Hunters
2. The New Characters Are The Old Characters’ Kids
1. It All Focuses On Luke’s Lost Hand

For as long as I can remember Princess Leia was my hero. Smart, brave, and sassy Leia didn’t let her petiteness or her gender define her or hold her back in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Certainly if you were looking for a female role model in Episodes 4, 5, or 6 you didn’t have many choices. Mon Montha and Oola are not exactly awe-inspiring characters to get very excited about. Princess Leia was the only real game in town for young girls looking for a woman to look up to. And luckily for us, Leia was more diplomat than princess and more rebel than wallflower.

However, we never truly got to see the Leia I was hoping for at the end of Return of the Jedi. Sure Leia held her own in Episode 6 – she took out Jabba the Hutt, made allies out of Ewoks, and helped save the day on Endor. But Leia had so much more to offer that we never got to see. Yoda talked about it to Obi-Wan “Hey if Luke goes down we’ve got Leia to save us” (not a direct quote, sorry Yoda). Darth Vader talked about it in his threat to Luke about turning Leia to the dark side. There was a lot of talk about how even more amazing Leia could be but we never got to see it.

I’m hoping like crazy that Leia is a Jedi Knight in Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens. How can she not be? But I’m hoping even more that Daisy Ridley’s character fulfills the promise of a female Star Wars character. I think Natalie Portman did everything she could with the Padme Amidala character in the prequels, but it just wasn’t satisfying enough for me.

It seems fair now to say that Ridley’s character is the “Rachel” role in the casting call that went out almost a year ago (I’m assuming this is not going to end up being the character’s real name). She is a street smart orphan (is there really any other kind?) who appears to have the ‘don’t mess with me’ attitude of Leia and perhaps the Force is with her?

We have added x54 screencaps of Daisy Ridley in the “100% BEEF” short which was an entry to Four4 film competition 2013 by Mike Batecko. Four4 is a short film competition from River Film challenging film makers to produce a film consisting of just 4 shots, which are each 4 seconds long. This year’s theme is “horror”. You can watch the video, here.

Either J.J. Abrams has just raised his mystery box tactics to a whole new level, or people are terrible. You decide.

For the past five months, Abrams has been all over the world filming Star Wars Episode VII with a near-unprecedented level of curiosity surrounding the production. Paparazzi have been clamoring for set photos. Images of the actors simply walking on the streets are news. Recently, drones captured set images Abrams was surely not happy to see. That’s not even counting the online leaks about plot points, characters and more.

The whole time, the two safest and most exciting sources of Star Wars news were Daisy Ridley and John Boyega. The young actors, likely the two leads of the film, had been carefully documenting the process on social media. Both loved to tweet their thoughts about the process, posting funny videos and photos on Instagram, all the while never revealing anything.

Considering how much of a behemoth the “Star Wars” universe is, it is not a shock to see an insane number of plot theories, both crazy and likely, sprout here and there, especially since the production of “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” is blanketed with pure mystery. With tons of conjectures flying around, actor Oscar Isaac helped everyone to narrow them down at the least.

The actor, who plays the role of Poe Dameron, slammed speculations in a talk with Yahoo Movies.

“I can’t speak for the cast and crew, I can just speak for myself, but for me I thought, ‘Don’t you want to wait so you can get the real thing?'” he said. “But it creates excitement for it. I don’t think these little leaks necessarily ruined watching the trailer. And also, the [plot theories] that get that formulated based on these things — they couldn’t be more far off-base.”

How wild are those theories that led Isaac to call them “off-base”? Business Insider cites one where main characters look for Luke Skywalker after they chance upon his lost lightsaber. IDigital Times has one that claims John Boyega as the new “Force-sensitive” Luke Skywalker. Business Insider adds that his character will be an evil storm trooper turned good guy. The character of Adam Driver will be his main foe (well, basically in the whole story). Daisy Ridley’s Ray will be “his Leia.” Badass Digest has another speculation, where the plot is said to bear a resemblance to “A New Hope.”

None of these seemed to have hit the mark. It looks like “Star Wars” fanatics will have to wait for the premiere of “Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens” for all their questions to be answered. That would mean waiting until Dec. 18, 2015.

For something that could easily be accused of being nothing more than a cash grab, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” introduced itself in an unexpected way. Subverting the principles of brand recognition, the teaser from director J.J. Abrams didn’t simply place the older version of Luke, Han and Leia front and center for more of the same.

Instead, we got two new faces: one belonging to a black man and the other, a woman.

It was a clear statement. Here are some images you know — a stormtrooper, a droid, a lightsaber — but starting right now, “Star Wars” is never going to be the same.

But the excitement Daisy Ridley and John Boyega bring to the series began before they ever showed up on our screens. Their (sadly) now defunct Twitter accounts were sources of genuine enthusiasm, and it was impossible not to relate. I mean, how would you react if you had been cast in “Star Wars”?

The prequels made it easy to be cynical about “Star Wars.” Until recently, the series was just another CGI-filled moneymaker, but here were these two young people, thrilled and open about their excitement to be a part of something so big and so powerful. While their tweets never discussed specifics, you could almost feel the hum of something great and unexpected happening.

And their attitudes obviously had to come from somewhere, so here’s to hoping that their energy was something that ran through the entire production. Because if “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is anything like Boyega and Ridley make me think it is, we’re in for a treat.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” opens in theaters on December 18, 2015.

The Force Awakens‘ is one of the most anticipated movies of 2015, but fans have to wait until December.

Nor was the excitement confined to cinemas; online, the clip was reportedly viewed more than 20 million times within 24 hours, and Twitter quickly became consumed with reaction to the imagery, which paid homage to George Lucas’ original 1977 epic while also introducing new characters and locales.

If it seems unusual that an 88-second glimpse of a film that isn’t due for release until Dec. 18, could generate such intense interest, it is. But “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” isn’t the average Hollywood blockbuster – it’s easily one of the most anticipated movies of next year and possibly of the decade.
