Daisy Ridley has traded a galaxy far, far away for the Mongolian steppe in the new trailer for the documentary “The Eagle Huntress.”
The movie, narrated by Ridley, follows a 13-year-old girl named Aisholpan, as she trains to become the first female in twelve generations of her family to become an eagle hunter.
“She’s strong, she’s brave and she’s a total natural,” Ridley says about Aisholpan in the trailer. “But when the competition ends, the real test begins,” she teases.
“The Eagle Huntress is directed by Otto Bell.
Ridley is also an exec producer on the film along with Morgan Spurlock, Jeremy Chilnick, Dan Cogan, Regina K. Scully, Marc H. Simon, Barbara Dobkin, Susan MacLaury.
It features the original song “Angel by the Wings” performed by Sia, which she co-wrote with Greg Kurstin.
“The Eagle Huntress” originally premiered at Sundance and will open in New York and Los Angeles on Oct. 28, followed by a national release in the following weeks.
Ahead of her new album of duets, launching in August, pop superstar Barbra Streisand released a video of herself performing along with The Dark Knight Rises’s Anne Hathaway and Star Wars: The Force Awakens’s Daisy Ridley.
You can check it out above. In the video, the trio perform “At the Ballet” from A Chorus Line. The revelation came after Ridley posted a photo of the two to Instagram back in March, teasing more details to come.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens, directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan & Abrams, features a cast including actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong’o, Gwendoline Christie, Crystal Clarke, Pip Andersen, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow. They will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hit theaters December 18, 2015, kicking off a new trilogy of Saga films as Episodes VIII and IX are already scheduled. The film garnered a record $247 million at the domestic box office and $529 million globally in its opening weekend.
Are you excited to hear Daisy Ridley as Taeko and Dev Patel as Toshio in Only Yesterday next week? Ridley spoke about how she felt about the film in a short video interview with GKIDS, and commented on the progressiveness of it, even today:
For a film to center on a woman in the ’60s and ’80s, and have been already released 25 years ago and with cinema still being where it is today with people not being represented right…is very exciting.
The Studio Ghibli movie first came out in 1991 (it’s older than Ridley!), and its themes about country life, coming-of-age, and female childhood made it the highest grossing domestic movie in Japan that year. The story resonated largely with the audience in the face of the financial crisis, conformist attitudes, and the state of Japanese agriculture. All these factors might make you think United States viewers may find Only Yesterday dated, or not relatable, but Ridley thinks there’s something in there for everyone:
It’s funny because I guess Ghibli films, a lot of the time, are fantastical and everything–but the human stories are so human. They are what so many people around the world can identify with. I think the reason this is such a loved film and will continue to be so is because it doesn’t feel foreign. It feels exactly right, like, you know, ‘how do you make you dreams come true’ and stuff like that and, I guess, you live. You go day-to-day, try new things, and you meet new people, and eventually you’ll kind of end up where you should be, so I think anyone around the world–girl, boy, young or old goes through transitional periods of self-discovery and because of that this film will speak to everybody.
Only Yesterday is opening nationwide February 26th. You can also view screencaps, here.
In 2013, Daisy appeared in a short film titled “Under” where she had a brief appearance as a waitress. We have added x17 screencaps, and you can watch it, here.
